BushWhacker Conservation

In 2007, we were all visiting after a jackpot about the fishing at our three local lakes.  As Copan, Birch and Hulah continue to give up fewer and smaller fish, we pondered what we could do to make things better.  Later that year we started cutting down cedar trees to place in Copan.  Not just to have places to catch fish but to help with the recruitment of the bass that are spawned there.  We put out over 700 trees in over 100 different places in order to give the new bass fry a place to hide from predators.  It was a huge success in our community with over 60 people volunteering their time and fuel to work.  We are still working to have a nursery pond for the lake as well.  Here are a few pictures of the brush being put in place.

I have a few pictures that I will post as soon as I can from our habitat day.

In 2008 we decided to work on the Hulah nursery pond to raise some bass fry to a size that gave them a greater chance of survival.  It was a lot of work to get the pond to working condition.  The catch basin was dilapidated to badly to be used and the screen on the drain tube was rusted away.  With help from volunteers and a donation from the ODWC, we were able to put the pond to use in that same year.  We released 2998 bass into Hulah Lake in March of 2009.  We plan to duplicate this program every year.
